[Editorial] Going beyond algorithmic fairness in health care
Samenvatting
[Editorial] Going beyond algorithmic fairness in health care. Algorithmic bias can create and exacerbate health disparities. Famously, in 2019 Obermeyer and colleagues showed that an algorithm that used predicted health-care costs as a proxy for health-care needs exhibited racial bias, resulting in the false assumption that Black patients in the USA are healthier than equally sick White patients. Additionally, a study by Seyyed-Kalantari and colleagues showed that underserved patient populations can be underdiagnosed by state-of-the-art computer vision algorithms in x-ray pathology classifications.
